MIami Gardens, Fla.- The St. Thomas Volleyball program announced today that
Betina Schmidt,
Aline Viapiana and
Mayara Gomes have signed a grant in aid form to play for the Bobcats next season. This closes out a very accomplished and experienced recruiting class for 2010 for Women's Volleyball.
Mayara Gomes a 5'9 setter comes to Miami Gardens from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Where she grew up playing volleyball. She was a starting setter at Polk CC Lake Sumter CC where she was recognized as first team all-conference and led the team in Assists and was third in digs. Mayara will be a Junior majoring in International Business at St. Thomas.
Aline Viapiana a 6'0 Middle Hitter comes to STU from Colombo, Brazil where she was born and raised. She went on to start for Polk CC and Lake Sumter CC as a Middle Blocker and made second team all-conference. She led her team in hitting efficiency at a .375 clip. Aline is also a Junior majoring in International business at St. Thomas.
Betina Schmidt is a 6'2" Setter/ OH who comes from Novo Hamburgo, Brazil. Betina brings international playing experience from the Brazilian National Team. She was the starting setter and Team Captain for the U-20 national team. Betina brings size and talent to the Volleyball program as a sophomore and will also be majoring in International Business.
With these additions Women's Volleyball will close out the 2010 recruiting class, with 8 newcomers. A recruiting class that will bring a mixture of depth, experience, height, and talent to a St. Thomas team who finished the regular season with a 4th ranking in 2009 .
