STU DEFEATS AVE MARIA, TO HOST FINAL FOUR

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Floyd Battle scored 19 points and Davorn Bryant shot 7-of-7 from the field for 15 points as St. Thomas handled Ave Maria 84-72 in the quarterfinals of The Sun Conference Championship on Saturday night at the Fernandez Family Center. With the win, the top seeded Bobcats will host the Final Four of the conference tournament which begins Monday on the STU campus.

Battle hit three three-pointers and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line en route to a team-high 19 points. Bryant made his presence known in the paint shooting 100% from the field while getting to the free throw line three times. Khaalis Coppock-Bey hit four three-pointers on his way to 14 points, while Demetris Allen added 11.

STU dominated on the boards, outrebounding AMU 39-23, including a 15-4 advantage on the offensive glass. Ten different Bobcats pulled down at least two rebounds, led by Lorel Beckford and Heberto Guanipa who each had six. In second chance points, STU held a 20-2 advantage.

The Bobcats were in control for most of the contest with their biggest lead of 17 points coming late in the second half. Ave Maria slowed down the pace at the start of the game and held a 10-9 lead six minutes into the contest. However, the Gyrenes never led again over the final 33 minutes of play.

St. Thomas will host the Final Four of the Sun Conference Men's Basketball Championships presented by Olympus Insurance with all games being played at the Fernandez Family Center. The semifinals begin Monday at 5 p.m. with no. 2 seed Northwood vs. no. 3 seed Southeastern. St. Thomas will play the fifth seed Thomas (Ga.), 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first semifinal (app. 7 p.m.) on Monday night. The championship game will be played on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
