MEDINA SIGNS PRO CONTRACT WITH HOUSTON ASTROS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas University outfielder Edwin Medina officially signed a professional contract with the Houston Astros organization on Wednesday.  Medina was selected in 33rd round (967th overall) by the Astros in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.

Medina became the second STU baseball player selected in the 2014 Draft joining junior left-handed pitcher Emilio Ogando who was selected in the 12th round (363rd overall) by the Kansas City Royals.  The Bobcats have had five players drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft over the past three seasons with Joel Capote (Angels, 2012), Dane Stone (Marlins, 2012) and Ricky Claudio (Mariners, 2013) aong with Medina and Ogando.

As a junior this past season for the Bobcats, Medina hit .391 with three home runs and 41 RBI.  An Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and first team All-Conference selection, he led STU in hits (79), total bases (105), walks (28), doubles (13), and stolen bases (37).
