MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – No. 6 seed Thomas University (14-9, 8-8 TSC) upset third seeded St. Thomas (20-9, 11-5 TSC) 75-68 Thursday night in the quarterfinals of The Sun Conference Championships at the Fernandez Family Center. With the win, the Night Hawks secured a berth in the semifinals to be played on Monday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. vs. no. 2 seed Warner.
Kristers Zeidaks led the Bobcats with 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Darwin Trotman scored 12 points and Tim Sada added 11.
The Bobcats trailed early, falling behind 18-9 at the 11:13 mark of the first half. STU responded to get within three points before going on a 10-0 run that was capped by a beautiful "and-one" reverse lay-up by Fotios Malelis. The Bobcats ended the first half on a 15-6 run to take a 35-29 lead into intermission.
The Night Hawks came out of halftime with a run of their own, cutting the Bobcats lead to 38-37 with 15 minutes to play. Thomas then took the lead midway through the second half.
The Bobcats will now await the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championships pairings announcement.
