In last week's ceremony on the St. Thomas campus, the annual awards for outstanding male and female athlete and outstanding leadership leadership in the STU community were handed out. These awards are symbolized by the Golden and Silver Bobcat respectively, and serve to recognize student-athletes who were instrumental and recognizable figures in the campus community over the past year.
The 2009 Golden Bobcats went to men's basketball senior guard Antonio Jones and junior women's basketball and softball player Cindy Castrillon, her second consecutive year being honored. Men's basketball swept the male awards when senior forward Cesar Chavez was named as the Silver Bobcat recipient, and junior soccer player Cindy Rivera won on the female side.
All players were nominated by either coaches, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, or a Bobcat Athletics staff member. Those individuals with the most nominations were then selected as the recipients of the awards. The players selected for the awards have a tradition of setting a stellar example for their peers inside and outside of the classroom, and this year's group was no exception. The St. Thomas community would like to thank these four athletes as well as all those who participated in athletics this year for continuing the integrity of the school and its programs. We look forward to an equally prosperous 2009-2010 campaign.
