FT. MYERS, Fla. – St. Thomas reached the Sun Conference Tournament Finals, but could not close out their final two games to bring home the crown. The Bobcats fell in the first game 6-2, and 13-1 in the second.
STU stuck with the #9 Eagles through six innings, trailing just 2-0. Embry-Riddle rallied with three runs in the seventh and followed up with a single run in the eighth to take a 6-0 advantage. The Bobcats strung 2 runs together in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough and the Eagles forced a second championship game. Embry-Riddle converted 7 hits into 6 runs, while the Bobcats only managed 2 runs out of 6 hits. Ozzie Sanchez and Ruy Rodriguez brought in St. Thomas' only runs, and Miguel Hernandez was credited with the loss.
The final game of the day proved to be a true test for the Bobcats. Through five innings St. Thomas trailed 2-1, but Embry-Riddle assembled back-to-back 3-run innings in the sixth and seventh to create a cushion. They followed up with five more runs in the eighth to make it a 13-1 decision in the Sun Conference Final. STU had 8 hits in the game, but only managed 1 unearned run. Michael Arostegui took the loss with 4 earned runs in five and two-thirds innings.
