LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Bobcats traveled to Warner Saturday for Sun Conference basketball action. STU relinquished an 8-point first half-lead before losing in overtime, 87-90.
The Bobcats came out hot, building an 8-point lead just six minutes into the game. Warner battled back and brought the game to within a single point with two minutes remaining in the first half. Solid rebounding and free-throw shooting helped the Bobcats take a 33-25 lead into the locker room.
Antonio Jones led STU in the first period with 10 points, while Kristaps Brencans added 7 of his own.
Despite leading the entire first half, the Bobcats surrendered their advantage four minutes into the second period when the Royals brought the game to a 37-37 tie. Warner got their first lead of the game at the twelve minute mark, but Jones answered with a 3-pointer. A back and forth battle ensued for the remainder of the period, but the Bobcats were able to establish a 74-71 advantage with seventeen seconds remaining after
Preston Jackson hit consecutive free-throws. Brencans was called for a foul with six seconds on the clock, and Warner's Brennan Taylor hit 1-of-2 to bring the lead to 74-72. Warner got the offensive rebound following the miss and Jones was called for another foul with just two seconds left. Derell Henderson hit both free-throws to tie the game at 74 apiece.
The Royals held a 6-point lead in OT before the Bobcats rallied behind two free-throws and a three-pointer from Jones, the leading scorer in NAIA D-II Men's Basketball. The game stood at 85-84 in favor of Warner with thirty seconds remaining when the strategy turned to fouls. Zack Hackett sent David Westberry to the line where he hit the the first but missed the back-end only to have another Royal get the rebound. Another foul and made free-throws put the lead at 88-84. The difference was more than the Bobcats could handle with just sixteen seconds remaining.
Jones led all scorers with 38 while Jackson and Brencans supported with 11 each. The Bobcats fall to 4-8 while Warner improves to 10-4. STU will host Fla. Memorial at 7 PM Tuesday.
