MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- The Bobcats welcomed the Lions of Florida Memorial to the Fernandez Center Tuesday night for STU's third conference game of the season. Cross-town rival, Fla. Memorial escaped with the overtime win, 69-66.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with four lead changes and a single tie. The Bobcats were able to take a 1-point lead into the locker room despite turning the ball over 12 times.
David Nesbitt and
Antonio Jones led the Bobcats in scoring with 7 points each.
A few forced turnovers and a pair of made free-throws from the Lions gave them a 5-point advantage with fourteen minutes remaining. STU battled hard and gained a 1-point lead following made free-throws from Nesbitt and Jones, and a jumper hit by
Tracy Razz with four minutes to go.
The Lions rode forced turnovers and made free-throws into a 6-point lead with less than a minute left. Smart substitutions, exchanging offense for defense and vice-versa, helped the Bobcats to find themselves in position to tie the game with six seconds left. Fortunately, the Bobcats have the leading scorer in NAIA D-II Men's Basketball and he did not dissappoint.
Antonio Jones dropped a three-pointer as regular time expired with the game tied at 60-60.
STU went up four following an old -fashioned 3-point play from Jones just a minute into OT. With two minutes remaining the game was knotted up at 66, and neither team could get a shot to fall until finally the Lions got a 3-point play of their own and took a 69-66 lead. The Bobcats had one possession to tie but
Preston Jackson turned the ball over with eight seconds to go.
Jones led all scorers with 25 points, while Nesbitt and Razz contributed with 14 and 13, respectively. The Bobcats fall to 4-9 (0-3 in Sun Conference), while the Lions improve to 3-14 (1-2 in Sun Conference). STU welcomes Webber Int'l to the Fernandez Center Friday night at 7 PM.
