MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.— The STU Men's Basketball season got under way Friday night at the Fernandez Family Center with the dismantling Barry University by a final score of 86-68.

The Bobcats were lead by a double-double effort from All-American candidate David Nesbitt leading all scores with 17 points and adding 10 rebounds.  It looks as if Nesbitt is trying to establish himself as a premier big man in the NAIA.

Nesbitt commented post game “I had a good year last year and I came with the intention of taking over this conference.  Me, Everson [Lacerda], Chuck [Sanders], we want to be the best forwards in this conference and the nation.”

Nesbitt was aided by Jeffery Remmington and his 16 points with two coming on a raucous alley-hoop from Eugene Davis that sent the home crowd into frenzy.

“We've been together for two years now and he knows what I like to do… Gene reads the floor well” remarked Remmington.

Kevin Hincapie scored 13 points and newcomer Dylan O'Sullivan added 10 as they took turns scoring with O'Sullivan scoring eight in the first half and Hincapie adding nine in the second half.

Clark Maloney's patented high pressure defense kept the visiting Buccaneers on their heels all evening as they forced turnover after turnover.  The Barry broadcaster even remarked at one point that it seemed as if Barry turned the ball over every time down the court.

Maloney boasted “We put a lot of emphasis and a lot of pride on our defense.  It's something we hang our hat on.  At the end of the day I really believe that if we play basketball they way we want to play basketball we will be getting it done at the defensive end.”

“I'm happy for the victory, no question but I didn't think we would play this well this fast” Maloney added.

It was evident from the middle of the first half that the Buccaneers were unable to get a rhythm going.
Barry University Head Coach Cesar Odio had this to add about the play of STU on the night, “The St Thomas defense tonight was great. They were terrific; they played the way we want to play. I told our team they were the King tonight and we were the queens”

It was a fitting quote seeing as how the STU Homecoming King and Queen, Christian Lopez and Noralis Lambert were crowned at halftime.
