STU DEFEATS FLOMO IN OT; WIN STREAK AT NINE

1/12/2012 9:43:00 AM

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla- The St. Thomas men's basketball team won its ninth consecutive game defeating backyard rival Florida Memorial, 65-64 in overtime, Thursday night at FMU. The Bobcats (10-6, 3-1) came back from an 11-point halftime deficit and came away with the win in their first overtime game of the year.

Senior forward David Nesbitt had his fourth double-double of the year with 24 points and ten rebounds to lead the Bobcats.  Junior forward Chuck Sanders came off the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Bobcats trailed at halftime 36-25 as both teams shot poorly and turned the ball over in a sloppy first half.  STU would chip away at the FMU lead and take its first lead of the second half on a Kevin Hincapie layup off his own steal to make the score 50-49 with 7:34 left in regulation.

The Bobcats would lead by as many as three points down the stretch, yet regulation would end tied up at 60 to force overtime.  The Bobcats then led for the entire overtime period with Nesbitt scoring four of STU's five points in OT.

STU's win streak began on December 1 with a conference win at Embry-Riddle. The streak continued with road wins against Lynn, Barry and at Palm Beach Atlantic followed by wins vs. College of Bahamas and Xavier (La).  Thursday's win at Florida Memorial brought the streak to nine games.

The Bobcats will look to extend their win streak to ten games with their conference home opener on Saturday vs. No. 17 Warner at 7 p.m. at the Fernandez Family Center on the STU campus.
