MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Through six games, the St. Thomas men's basketball team is 4-2 under the guidance of Coach
Patrick Gayle. Following a stretch of three consecutive road games, the Bobcats now return home for their Sun Conference opener on Saturday, Dec. 1 vs. Southeastern (7-3) at the Fernandez Family Center.
The Bobcats traveled to the Gulf Coast of Alabama last week where they split their two games of the road trip. On Nov. 20, STU defeated Spring Hill, 67-65 in a come-from-behind win. Trailing 27-26 at halftime, the Bobcats came out in the second half on a furious 20-6 scoring run, building a lead of 13 points. Spring Hill battled back, but the Bobcats never relinquished their lead and held on for the two point victory.
John Nunnally led the Bobcats with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc.
Floyd Battle had 16 points and four steals, while
Dylan O'Sullivan had eight points and seven assists.
The following night, the Bobcats lost a close game to Mobile (Ala.), 76-73. Again, the Bobcats trailed at halftime, this time by ten points to the host team. St. Thomas outscored Mobile (Ala.) 36-29 in the second half, but ultimately fell three points short. Four STU players scored in double figures for the Bobcats led by
Demonte' Simpson who scored 17 points on 6-of-seven shooting from the field.
Kevin Hincapie had 14 points, while Nunnally was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. O'Sullivan added 12 points.
On the season, the Bobcats have five players in double figures led by Hincapie (14.7 ppg) and Battle (13.0 ppg). Nunnaly (11.3 ppg), Simpson (11.0 ppg), and O'Sullivan (10.8 ppg). Nunnally and Simpson share the team lead in rebounds per game with both players at a 7.3 clip.
St. Thomas will face Southeastern in its conference opener on Saturday. The Fire were picked to finish fifth in the Sun Conference in the preseason coaches poll, one spot behind the Bobcats.
