14TH RANKED BOBCATS OPEN SEASON WITH ROAD WIN

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The St. Thomas Men's Basketball team, ranked 14th in the nation, opened the 2013-14 season with a road win defeating Montreat 95-87 in Montreat, N.C. Senior Demetris Allen led St. Thomas with 24 points, six assists, six rebounds and five steals in his first game as a Bobcat.

Allen was one of five Bobcats to score in double figures. Davorn Bryant came off the bench to score 17 points. Chuckie Becton scored 15 points and led the team in rebounds with seven rebounds, including six offensive rebounds. James Vice scored 15 points, while Demonte' Simpson scored 13 points.

The Bobcats trailed 49-46 in the first half, then rallied by outscoring Montreat by 11 points in the second half. A basket by Becton put the Bobcats up for the first time at the 16:19 mark to start an 8-0 run that ended with a Simpson bucket to put STU up by seven. The Bobcats did not trail for the rest of the contest, stretching their lead to as many as 11 points.

Much of the game was won on the free throw line as the Bobcats went to the line 46 times, making 30 of their attempts. Allen went 9-of-13 from the line, while Bryant went 7-of-13.
