STU TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS AT AMU

AVE MARIA, Fla. - St. Thomas (6-6, 1-2 TSC) allowed a season-low points against and won its first Sun Conference game of the season with a 64-44 win at host Ave Maria (7-7, 0-3 TSC).

The Bobcats were led by their starting backcourt of Chuckie Becton and Mikon Hewitt. Becton scored a game-high 16 points, while Hewitt recorded nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.  Forward Lorel Beckford added 12 points.

The 44 points by Ave Maria marked the fewest points scored against the Bobcats this season. The previous low was 47 by Coastal Georgia in an STU win on Dec. 13.

Leading 28-21 at halftime, the Bobcats outscored the Gyrenes by 13 points in the second half to put the game away.

Much of the game was won on the defensive end with STU recording 14 steals, while AMU committed 25 turnovers.

St. Thomas returns to action on Saturday vs. 13th ranked Northwood at 4 p.m. in a Sun Conference matchup at the Fernandez Family Center.
