MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (2-2) escapes with a win 72-71 over the University of Cumberlands (3-3) by a free throw in the last couple minutes of the game.
Michael Walker was the game's leading scorer with 25 points. Following with assistance was teammate James Vice as he complimented Walker's performance with an additional 19 points. Vice allowed the Bobcats to clinch the game in the second half when he sank two free throws with under two minutes to go on the clock.
While both teams started off the half exchanging points equally, the Bobcats would remain in the lead for the entire half. With six minutes left in the first half the Bobcats would increase the lead to 10 by a free throw by Walker. The Bobcat offense that looked promising from the beginning of the half, would manage to hold the lead 38-33 heading into the second half. Vice scored 12 of his 19 points in the first half while Walker scored 12 of his 25.
Play for the Bobcats would continue, as they would continue to hold the lead with their pressing offense. The Patriots would trail up until the ninth minute of the half when Kaashif English would sink a two point shot to take the first lead of the game 57-56. St. Thomas Immediatley struck back, in the ninth minute, as they grasped the lead until the fourth minute of the half. As the clock would reach is final minutes, both teams would lay it all on the line trying to add another win to their record. With the score tied at 70 with two minutes remaining, Vice would get sent to the free throw line and sink both of his shots. The Bobcats now leading by two, a personal foul by Walker would send English to the line with 47 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, English would make only one of his two attempts to tie the score and St. Thomas would hold off the Patriots until the clock hit zero.
St. Thomas will have a slight rest before they travel up to Tennessee for the NAIA DII Showcase. On Saturday, November 28th the Bobcats will face-off against West Virginia University Institute of Technology at 1 P.M. E.T. followed by a match-up on Sunday, November 29th against Cincinnati Christian University at 3 P.M. E.T.
