DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – St. Thomas fell to Southeastern 80-76 in an overtime thriller in the semifinals of The Sun Conference Championship presented by Olympus Insurance Monday night on the campus of Embry-Riddle.
Chuckie Becton scored 22 points and
David Santiago added 17 to lead the Bobcats. Also scoring in double figures were
Michael Walker and
Tim Sada who each scored 10 points. Becton also led the Bobcats on the glass with eight boards, including four on the offensive end.
The Bobcats trailed by as many as seven points in the first half but battled back and with back-to-back buckets in the closing seconds of the first half took a 33-31 lead into intermission. In the second half, the Bobcats opened up the biggest lead of the game at 53-43 with a bucket by Walker. The Fire responded with a 13-0 run to take a 56-53 lead with 5:23 to play in regulation. A Becton basket gave STU a four-point lead with 90 seconds to play, but SEU with four consecutive points to close regulation with the score 66-66.
SEU led most of the overtime period and outscored the Bobcats 14-10 for the win.
St. Thomas will wait to see its fate as to whether it will qualify for the 2015 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship to be held from March 11-1 in Point Lookout, Mo.
