LAKELAND, Fla.- St. Thomas (16-6, 7-3 STC) pulled away late in the second to ultimately take down Southeastern (11-13, 2-9 TSC) by a final score of 87-77 on Saturday night.
St. Thomas came in to this game with a five game winning streak, as they looked to extend their streak in a tough road game.
The Bobcats controlled this match up early, coming out of the opening whistle with a 10-4 run, giving the Fire no room to breathe. After that, it was a constant battle for the lead in this first half. In total, there were six ties and 10 lead changes in the first. STU and SEU were putting on a show.
Armand Shoon drained a quick two pointer in the paint with three seconds left to ensure the Bobcats went in to the locker room with a lead, with the score reading 41-40.
Opening up the second half, it seemed as if both teams brought the same intensity from the first half. Within the first four minutes, it was a constant back and forth, but the Bobcats took sole control from then on. St. Thomas would pull away with less than eight minutes left in the second half. The score read 66-61 with 7:29 on the clock, a 10-to-2 scoring run gave the Bobcats the largest lead of the night of 13 points.
Raheem Bowman made sure STU left with a bang as the clock read 3:34, a thunderous dunk gave the team momentum to ultimately take the victory away from home and extended their win streak to six in a row.
The big scorer on the night for the Bobcats was Junior guard
Mikon Hewitt with 21 points.
Timothy Sada and Shoon matched each other with 14 points each.
Kristers Zeidaks earned 12 points in the victory.
Next up for STU is a home game against cross town rival Florida Memorial, a key Sun Conference and seasonal match up for both teams, taking place during the Homecoming Week here at St. Thomas University. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m. at the Fernandez family center on Thursday February 2.
