MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- #14 St. Thomas (14-5, 7-1 TSC) took down 15th ranked Southeastern (12-5, 5-3 TSC) by a final score of 86-81 in an intense, well-fought conference matchup between two top 15 ranked schools late Thursday night at the Fernandez Family Center.
This matchup between the schools was billed as The Sun Conference Match of the Week.
The first half brought an intense and well fought battle for the lead heading into the half as both teams shot lights out on the night. STU took a commanding game-high 14-point lead in the game with 10:33 left in the first a 31-17 score line. The Fire stormed back and brought the game within one-point, 38-37, as the clock read 4:54 until the half. SEU would ultimately take the lead and hold on to a 46-45 lead heading into the half.
It was the second half that proved to be the deciding factor for the game as STU dominated down the stretch. The first nine minutes of the second half ended with St. Thomas down by eight points, but a monstrous layup from the big man in the paint,
Raheem Bowman, brought STU within striking distance.
It was largely a team effort as four Bobcats scored in double digits, while defense played a major role in the win. Of the team's 44 rebounds, 26 came on the defensive end, which blended perfectly with the six thunderous blocks. Bowman recorded his fourth consecutive and his ninth double-double on the season.
Notable numbers on the night came from Bowman (26 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks),
Darwin Trotman (14 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals),
Mikon Hewitt (13 points and six assists) and Philip Saunders (11 points and four rebounds).
Next up for the Bobcats is a home conference matchup against Ave Maria on Saturday, January 13 at 4 p.m.
Come out and support as St. Thomas looks to continue its dominance of The Sun Conference play!
