MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 17, 2024) – The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Basketball team won an overtime thriller against the Southeastern Fire in front of their home crowd. A strong second half effort, and a late three point shot by
Milton Matthews and a lay up by
Daniel Ogoro secured the victory for the Bobcats.
The game began with a Fire three-pointer, leading to STU going down big early. Clawing back into the game with grit,
Josh Taylor was able to draw a foul to finally get the Bobcats on the board. Throughout the first half, the Bobcats and Southeastern traded baskets. The game showcased excellent teamwork, with strategic substitutions and timeouts by both teams.
Notable plays included a dunk by Southeastern to keep up their momentum, and STU's
Kyle Feldman contributing with a good 3-pointer. The first half ended with Southeastern holding a slight lead, but the Bobcats stayed competitive, but STU had some work to do coming out of the locker room.
As the second half began,
Milton Matthews made a strong comeback for the St. Thomas Bobcats, scoring crucial points. However, Southeastern continued to display their offensive prowess, with a Fire three-pointer and strong layups.
The game remained close, with both teams demonstrating resilience and determination. Reggie Mesidor's consistent scoring for Southeastern and timely steals added adversity to the matchup. St. Thomas responded with key plays, including a dunk by
Cearius Warren and a successful free throw.
In the later part of the second half, the Bobcats managed to close the gap with well-executed plays.
Joshua Thrower and
Jordan Hernandez made valuable contributions, but Southeastern maintained their lead with precise shooting and defensive efforts. A
Milton Matthews shot behind the arch cut the lead to two, and
Daniel Ogoro tied the game up by driving to the bucket.
STU took control of overtime early, as Matthews hit another one from deep. After a technical foul on the Fire, Matthews made both free throws to extend the Bobcat lead. The Fire were able to fight back into it, cutting the lead to three.
Josh Taylor however, was able to throw one down to make it a two possession lead once again. Nearing the end with the Fire able to get it to within two points,
Josh Taylor secured the game making two at the free throw line for the Bobcat victory 79-75.
