Men's Basketball Takes Trip to West Palm for Battle with the Seahawks

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 23, 2024) – The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Basketball team heads north to West Palm Beach, to tip off against the Keiser University Seahawks. The Bobcats are coming off a tough loss to Ave Maria, and are looking to bounce back against a 12-5 (3-2) Seahawk team.

Last Saturdays game against the Gyrenes, the Bobcats suffered from the three ball leaving Ave Maria's #15 open beyond the arch and he couldn't seem to miss from deep. Josh Taylor had one of his best as a Bobcat with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and a block. Taylor made a living just beyond the paint for a jumper that was automatic. Leading scorer Milton Matthews was also a contributor with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Cearius Warren was on another level in the paint the whole night, racking up 11 rebounds, along with 11 points for the double-double. The Bobcats played well, but ran into a hot shooter that hit a three at the perfect time the whole game to take away STU's momentum. In the first half the Bobcats shot 40% from the floor, and 33% from behind the arch. In the second half they came out with some higher intensity, shooting 50% from the floor, and 42.86% from three.

Keiser on the other hand is coming off a victory to a strong Warner team. The Seahawks are a fast team that is good in transition. In their game versus the Royals, Calvin Sirmans dropped 22 points, 8 rebounds, and three assists. Sirmans went 5-12 from the floor, but he makes a living driving to the net and getting the foul. He went 12-18 at the free throw line, so if the Bobcats can limit his trips to the line they can limit his production.

This Keiser team doesn't take many shots from behind the arch, going 4-22 against the Royals. As a team they shot 39% from the floor, and just 18.2% from three. Here's where the Seahawks win games. From the free throw line they were 61.7 from the line, making 29 of 47 attempts. If the Bobcats force them to take shots they don't want, and play the shot clock game with them it will make them uncomfortable. Previously said as well, limiting trips to the line is a must, don't get stuck in the offensive zone for them to have the fast breaks they like are some keys to victory.
