New Challenge, Same Result; Rugby Opens Fall With Win At Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah – Starting a new chapter in their short but already successful history on Saturday afternoon, the 18t-ranked St. Thomas Rugby Team showed that they can compete in Collegiate Rugby's highest level with a 67-10 victory over the University of Utah in the Bobcats' first fall friendly against a D1A program as STU aims to join the League in the 2025-26 academic year.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Welton Charumbira started the scoring with a three-point penalty kick in the 15th minute.
  • Charumbira connected on his second three-point PK in the 20th minute.
  • Nokutenda Mukumba converted a five-point try in the 23rd minute, with Charumbira adding a two-point conversion.
  • Emiliano Fernandez extended STU's lead with a five-point try in the 27th minute, followed by Chaumbira's two-point conversion.
  • Mukumba and Charumbira added seven points to the Bobcats' lead in the 41st minute.
  • Owen Phillips tallied five points on a try in the 45th minute, followed by a two-point conversion from Charumbira.
  • Nearly a minute after Phillips' score Lei Schaaf converted a five-point try with a successful two-point conversion from Charumbira.
  • Fernandez scored his second five-point try in the 50th minute, with STU adding two points on Charumbira's conversion.
  • Schaaf and Charumbira put seven more points on the scoreboard in the 61st minute.
  • Mukumba converted a five-point try in the 71st minute.
  • Schaaf ended the scoring in the 79th minute, followed by a two-point conversion from Mathias Adamo.

  • Mukumba scored three five-point tries.
  • Schaaf scored three five-point tries.
  • Charumbira converted two three-point PKs along with seven two-point conversions.
