Miami Gardens, Fla. - A day trip across sea from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport Bahamas for this pre-season friendly as the Bobcats continue to build toward the D1AA Spring season.
Two very early tries from Dzambo and Knapton in opposite corners were a great start but with a delayed ferry ride across and the difficult angle from the sidelines Charumbira barely had time to warm up, missing the first couple of conversion attempts. Debutant Nyakutya scored a 60 yard straight sprint race against his opposite number to the corner again. By now Charumbira had found his kicking boots to make it 17-0.
Some great work from Nuehoff dancing through the middle from the STU side of the field created a lot of loose play opportunities for Captain Phillips to get in under the posts and then Ndhelela in at the corner respectively. Some good work from forwards Bolton and another debutant Ryan in the first half made the set pieces look very smooth for STU and by Halftime Charumbira had scored a great individual try and Phillips and Knapton added another try each. 46-0 at halftime.Â
Coach Loyola brought on the entire bench at half time and the flow didn't change. Switching Mapani and Charumbira in the 10 and 15 roles also worked great resulting in Mapani scoring another 5 pointer.Â
The Forwards really started to turn the screw in the second half with two tries for Crawford and a push over try for Club Captain Testero, reward for scrum dominance. Mr Reliable Gyani Mosi was the last to score for STU before a nice moment for the Bahamas when a former Bahamas player came on the field to play a couple of minutes with his 3 children all on the field too. A great way to wrap up the game.
As with any traditional Rugby match the Bahamas team hosted a social afterwards with the team, Coaches and traveling entourage enjoying a pool party and BBQ before jumping back on the Ferry for the trip home.
Final score 81-7
