Rugby Defeats Ohio State At CRAA Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – Playing in front of the top collegiate rugby clubs as well as the coaching staffs from the USA Senior, U23 and U20 teams, the St. Thomas University Rugby team overcame an early deficit to Big Ten Conference champions Ohio State at the CRAA Fall Classic to upset the 19th-ranked Buckeyes 66-20. The triumph caps a successful fall for the Bobcats that featured an undefeated mark and the Florida College Conference 7's Rugby Championship trophy.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • A pair of successful tries in the first 15 minutes with two missed conversions gave Ohio State an early 10-0 lead.
  • Phillips got the Bobcats on the scoreboard in the 25th minute with a two-point conversion from Charumbira making it 10-7 before a try and two-point conversion by Charumbira in the 30th minute to flip the lead in STU's favor at 14-10.
  • Charumbira added to the Bobcats' lead with a three-point penalty in the 36th minute while Mukumba added five points on the try two minutes later capped by a Charumbira conversion to create a 24-10 halftime score.
  • Knapton started the scoring in the second half with five points in the 44th minute to make it 31-10.
  • Mukumba and the Buckeyes traded tries over the ensuing 17 minutes with Ohio State missing their conversions while Charumbira converted STU's to create a 45-20 score 61 minutes in.
  • Adamo (min. 71), Artera (Min. 77) and Knapton (Min. 79) rounded out the scoring the STU with Charumbira scoring two conversions while Knapton connected on one.
NOTEWORTHY:
  • Charumbira scored a team-best 24 points off eight conversions, one penalty and one try.
  • Mukumba used three tries for 15 total points.
  • Knapton added two tries and one conversion for 12 points.
