Men's Basketball Secures Seven Straight Wins and First Place in Sun Conference

LAKELAND, Fla. (February 14, 2024) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Basketball team secured their seventh straight victory tonight, defeating Southeastern by a score of 72-66. Cearius Warren secured the single season block record in St. Thomas history, picking up his 74th on the season. Warren also secured his seventh double-double of the season, with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

In the opening half, the Bobcats displayed their high-powered offense, shooting efficiently from the field with a stat line of 16-25 on field goals, including a solid 4-7 from beyond the arc. The Fire however shot well, going back and forth throughout the first half. Despite their efforts, turnovers plagued them slightly, with seven turnovers. The STU defensive effort was highlighted by some steals, showcasing their ability to disrupt the Fire's offensive rhythm.

Leading the charge for the Bobcats in the first half was Milton Matthews, who poured in 13 points, followed closely by Josh Taylor with eight. Anthony Harris and Daniel Ogoro contributed seven and five points respectively, while Cearius Warren added four to the scoreboard, ensuring a balanced offensive attack.

As the second half unfolded, the intensity only heightened, with both teams refusing to back down. The Bobcats adjusted their game plan and came out firing, determined to claw their way back into the lead. Despite facing a tough defensive challenge from the Fire, St. Thomas maintained their composure and executed effectively on both ends of the floor.

In the second half, the Bobcats continued to battle fiercely, tallying 13 field goals on 29 attempts. However, their three-point shooting saw a slight dip with 2-9 from beyond the arc. Nevertheless, they capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, converting seven out of nine attempts, showcasing their ability to capitalize on scoring chances.

Leading the scoring charge in the second half was Josh Taylor, who contributed 10 points, followed closely by Daniel Ogoro with eight. Cearius Warren added seven more to his tally, while Milton Matthews and Anthony Harris chipped in with six and four points respectively.
