Men's Basketball Looks for Six Straight as They Host Warner

2/9/2024 2:02:00 PM

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 9, 2024) – The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Basketball team returns to the Fernandez Family Center Saturday night, to host the Warner Royals. The Bobcats got the best of the Royals in Lake Wales a few weeks back, and will look to keep this five game win streak going and make it six.

The Bobcats are coming off their most dominating performance this season against Florida Memorial. STU ended the first half against the Lions on a 22-1 run, and came out in the second half and made it a 30-1 run. This is the best basketball they have been playing as a team, as Milton Matthews, Jordan Hernandez and Josh Taylor are always consistent. Now you are starting to see the team click because of the other guys around them. Guys like Anthony Harris off the bench, Daniel Ogoro, Cearius Warren, and Kyle Feldman are all crucial components to why the Bobcats have been dominating these last few weeks.

Last game Anthony Harris had his best game as part of STU, with 25 points, and going 5-5 from beyond the arch. Not usually a three shooter, but you can tell he's getting confident and that will help out the Bobcats as we approach the post season. Milton Matthews had a similar stat line as Matthews had 18 points, and Hernandez having 21 points and making six threes'. Something that some teams may overlook is what Cearius Warren is doing. Against the Lions, he had seven blocks and 18 rebounds. Warren leads the NAIA with 70 blocks in 2024 and is top five in many other categories.  As a team the Bobcats are fourth in the NAIA in points with 705, and points per game with 78.3. From behind the arch, they sit fifth as a team with threes made per game.

Warner on the other hand has lost four straight games, last game losing to Sun Conference leader Ave Maria in overtime 92-90. For the most part the Royals have been in every game so don't let the record fool you. Their leading scorer Blaize Darling Jr. has been electric thus far, having a total of 409 points, and a .524 field goal percentage. Not only does Darling Jr. lead the team in points, he leads in rebounds as well with 152.
