King Of The Mountain; Men's Volleyball Concludes AAC Conference Pod With Back-To-Back Sweeps

Miami Gardens, Fla. - Wrapping up play in their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) pod on Sunday with a pair of matches, the 15th-ranked St. Thomas Men's Volleyball recorded a pair of 3-0 sweeps over St. Andrews University and Carolina University.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1): 

  • Set 1 – After splitting the opening 26 points of the contest, STU scored three straight to take a 16-13 lead before fending off a late comeback attempt by the Knights that got them within one at 18-17 with a 3-0 response to extend their lead to 21-17. 

  • Set 2 – STU scored the opening two points of the second, and seven of the initial 10 to quickly take a 7-3 lead and held the advantage for the rest of the frame. 

  • Set 3 – An early 5-0 STU run quickly created an 11-4 separation, with the Bobcats keeping the lead above three for the rest of the match. 

 
NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1): 

  • Ian Izquierdo led the offense behind 11 kills on a .563 hitting percentage. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: (GAME 1): 

  • STU finished the match with 38 kills on a .453 hitting percentage versus 33 kills on a .208 clip for the Knights. 

  • St. Thomas served five aces versus three for the visitors.  

  • The Bobcats logged six assisted blocks, SAU recorded three solo and two assisted. 

  • STU held an 18-16 advantage in digs. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2): 

  • Set 1 – Carolina used an early 5-0 run in the first set to pull ahead of STU 8-7, only for a 10-1 Bobcats' stretch creating a 17-9 score. 

  • Set 2 – After trading the initial 18 points of the second set, the Bobcats scored back-to-back points to break the standstill and hold the advantage for the duration of the frame. 

  • Set 3 – STU scored the opening point of the third set and never trailed in the final stanza, quickly creatin a double-digit separation at 17-1. 

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2): 

  • Izquierdo tallied 12 kills. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: (GAME 2): 

  • STU finished the match with 40 kills on a .338 hitting percentage versus 19 kills on a .000 clip for the Bruins. 

  • St. Thomas served 10 aces versus four for the visitors.  

  • The Bobcats logged three solo blocks and five assisted blocks, Carolina recorded one solo and 10 assisted. 

  • STU held a 21-14 advantage in digs.
