What we look for:
The St. Thomas University Cheer Team serves as representatives for the University at various athletic and community events. The STU Cheer Team are student ambassadors that represent an athletic image and above all superior showmanship!
Cheer Team Requirements
Eligibility for Cheerleaders
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student at STU for the fall & spring semester. Undergraduate students must maintain a minimum of 12 credits and graduate students must maintain a minimum of 6 credits.
- Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA
- If you are an incoming freshman or transfer student, you must provide a letter of acceptance into the university.
- If you are a current student, you must provide a copy of your student ID and schedule and proof of enrollment
- Dance at home football & basketball games throughout the year.
- Travel to possible selected away football game and basketball tournaments.
- Practice at least three times per week during the school year.
- Participate in various promotional or community service events throughout the year.
- Adhere to all team rules and regulation
Skills to expect include:
NO Experience needed but is welcomed!!!
- Standing and running tumbling/ Sideline Tumbling Skills & Competitive Tumbling Skills: These skills are not required but often used at games, competitions, and appearances.
- Front walk over & back walkovers
- Aerials
- Standing Back Handspring
- Standing Back Tucks
- Back handspring series, Back tucks, Layouts, and Fulls
- Stunts: All participants will be asked to attempt and demonstrate stunting skills either as a flyer, base, backspot, or sidespot.
- All Girl - Lib grips, full up grips and basket grips
- Coed- Walk- in or Toss Chair, hands, or extension
- Ability to lead and engage a crowd:
- Cheer sideline cheers
- Crowd leadership
- Cheer motions & jumps:
- Dance motions
- Single Jumps- Toe Touch, Hurdler, Pike and a jump combination of 2 or 3 jumps of choice
- Interview

What to turn in prior to auditions
- Audition application and release form
- Headshot and full body shot
- Acceptance letter or proof of enrollment
- Copy of front and back of insurance card
- Recommendation letter from a coach, teacher, administrator, or manager
Attire for Auditions
Women
- Athletic shorts and sports bra
- STU Colors- We offer a wide selection of STU attire that you can purchase in our STU bookstore on campus
- Hair must be worn either a high ponytail or half up half down. Bow must be worn to the front
- Cheer shoes and or athletic shoes
- Face makeup, lipstick, blush, and mascara
- No jewelry
- Cover all visible tattoos
Men
- Athletic shorts and a t-shirt or tank top
- STU Colors- We offer a wide selection of STU attire that you can purchase in our STU bookstore on campus
- Sneakers and or athletic shoes
- No jewelry or visible tattoos
- Well-groomed and clean shaven
