Miami Gardens, FL - The St. Thomas University (1-6-1, 1-4 in The Sun Conference) women's soccer team and the Thomas University Knight Hawks (1-7-1) battled to a two overtime 2-2 tie. Lotta Vartia and Alexa Livingston scored for the Bobcats. Livingston scored on an assists from Mimi Louino.
The game started with the Bobcats being the aggressor early. All four of their first period shots came early in the first period. The spark may have come from the lineup change which featured Jennifer Morales starting her first game of the season. She scored her first goal of the season in the previous game against Northwood University.
Despite the aggressive start the Bobcats were not the first to score. The first goal of the game came from Aida Vojnikovic during the 21st minute. The Knight Hawks would maintain their 1-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period featured an even more determined Bobcat attack, they doubled their shot total from the first period. Varitia's goal came during the 53rd minute of play. It was apart of an aggressive day, she led the Bobcats in shots with four, three of which them were on goal.
Vartia's effort really made Knight Hawks goal keeper Heather Collins, work all day. Collins was up to the challenge though ending the game with two allowed goals and seven saves.
The second goal scored on Collins came after Louino took a free kick that landed near the front of the goal for Livingston to put in the back of the net. The goal during the 83rd minute tied the game at 2-2.
The rest of the game featured great goal keeping from both teams. Both goalies made saves on high pressure penalty kicks. In goal for the Bobcats during the entire 110 minute contest was Denisse Montero. She had eight saves and allowed two goals. The Bobcats will play again at home against St. Leo September 29 at 4 PM.
