MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - STU Men's Soccer knew they needed to beat Ave Maria in order to claim a share of the Sun Conference regular season title Wednesday afternoon. The Bobcats won convincingly with 6 goals and a clean sheet, while celebrating Senior Day festivities.
The Bobcats got out to a hot start with their first goal coming inside the match's first ten minutes. Senior
Jairon Moreno scored on a beautiful assist from
Mike Njie to give STU the early lead. The Bobcats continued to lay on the pressure and Jonathon Rico scored in the 30th minute on a Moreno assist. Maxi Longo scored St. Thomas' third goal of the half with a strike in the right side of the net. Longo's goal was assisted by senior
Miyen Spinneli.
More of the same in the second half as Rico added his second goal of the match on a ball that bounced in front of the net after being deflected from a corner.
Joel Krasso scored STU's fifth goal on a Rico assist with just under thirty minutes to play. The Bobcats' final goal came on a
Leo Diaz penalty kick after he was fouled in the box. Senior
Aaron Jones kept a clean sheet with 2 saves.
A big day of celebration at Bobcat Field as seniors Moreno, Spinneli and Jones were honored before the match. St. Thomas now holds a share of the conference title with No. 13 SCAD Savannah. STU beat the Bees in their Sept. 18 match, 2-1 (2 OT) to hold the tiebreaker and earn the No. 1 seed in the Sun Conference Tournament. STU will host the second-round of the Sun Conference Tournament on Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. after they enjoy a first-round bye.
