Women's soccer falls to Embry Riddle 4-2

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla- The STU women's soccer team took on Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Friday afternoon on Bobcat Field. STU came into the match with a 5-2 record and a 2-0 conference record. Embry Riddle came into the match with a 6-2-1 record and was 1-1 in the conference. STU lost 4-2.

Embry Riddle would get off to a fast start when they were quickly awarded a corner kick that was deflected in the 3rd minute of action. Embry Riddle would threaten a minute later with a shot on goal from long distance that was saved by STU's Ariana Lorenzo.

STU would threaten when they were awarded a free kick in the 10th  minute inside Embry Riddle's defensive third that was deflected. STU would threaten yet again in the 22nd minute with a beautiful through ball played by Melony Poviones to Sara Mira that was shot wide and out of play.

 The first breakthrough of the match came in the 30th minute for Embry Riddle off of a  corner kick and a subsequent scrum in the penalty area that resulted in a goal by Martine Olsen. It was assisted by Bjorg Olafs.

 Embry Riddle would attack again in the 33rd minute with a goal that was waved off by the referee for being off side. Embry Riddle would score in the 39th minute of the first half off of a beautiful whipped corner kick that was headed in by Bjorg Olafs to put Embry Riddle up 2 to nil.

 Embry Riddle would come out in the second half with guns blazing with a quick shot on goal that was saved by Ariana Lorenzo.

 STU's best shot of the match would come from Sara Mira in the 15th minute of the second half that was kick saved by Embry Riddle goalkeeper Lauren Gallant. Embry Riddle would score in the 62nd minute with a goal by midfielder Madeleine Edborn.

 STU would be awarded a penalty kick that was taken and scored by Sara Mira to cut the deficit to 2.  

 Embry Riddle would score yet another goal in the closing minutes of the match. STU assistant coach Lito Garro gave his assessment after the match. “At the beginning of the game we got to what we needed to get to”, Garro said. “But we can't give up corners and three goals” Garro added.

 “We didn't mark our players in the corners, Garro said. When we got the [penalty] goal then we started to play, and that can't happen”, Garro added.

 Embry Riddle head coach Samantha Bohon gave her thoughts after the match. “It's exactly what we expected, Michelle does a good job of preparing her team and we have the upmost respect for St. Thomas”, Bohon said. As we expected they came out and played hard” Bohon added.
