MIAMI GARDENS, Fla- The STU men's soccer team was in action on Bobcat Field taking on Johnson and Wales University Monday afternoon. The sky over the field was dark, cloudy and gray and there was a light drizzle of rain falling. Johnson and Wales came into the contest with a 0-10 record. STU was coming off a big conference win against SCAD and was looking to build on its recent success. STU won the match 6-0.
STU's first shot would come in the 8th minute of the match by Mike Hinden that went wide of the target. Johnson and Wales would threaten in the 10th minute with a shot on goal by Gabriel Suburo that was blocked by an STU defender. Johnson and Wales would subsequently be awarded a free kick on the edge of the area that was scooped up by STU goalkeeper Adam Green. STU's Mike Hinden would give it another try in the 14th minute that was saved by Johnson and Wales goalkeeper Jose Barreto. STU was awarded a free kick on the edge of Johnson and Wales' penalty area that sailed over the crossbar and out of play.
The first breakthrough of the match would come in the 16th minute by STU's Jhonathan Rico. It was a deflection that found its way to Rico and a quick step over move to beat the last Johnson and Wales defender and a shot that was tucked into the lower right hand corner of the goalpost to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Johnson and Wales would dodge a bullet in the 21st minute with another shot by Rico that went wide of its target. STU would add on to its lead with another goal in the 22nd minute this time by Mike Hinden with an assist from Jhonothan Rico. Rico played a through ball into the penalty area to Hinden who scored after a sequence of individual brilliance to beat Johnson and Wales goalkeeper Jose Barreto, for the match's second goal. STU would score yet another goal in the 27th minute by Eran Belo after a miss communication in the back that led to an STU possession in Johnson and Wales defensive third of the field and a great finish by Belo. STU made the most of their scoring chances in the first half. Rico would add on to his brilliant first half with his second goal in the 40th minute. Rico had two assists and two goals in the first half. STU was up 4-0 at this point. STU played well despite sloppy field conditions due to the rain that fell throughout the first half. The first half would come to a close with STU leading by 4 goals.
STU would get a shot on goal in the 57th minute by Andres Ruiz that hit the side netting of the goalpost and went out of play. Mike Hinden would give it a go in the 65th minute with a shot that sailed over the crossbar and out of play. STU would score again in the 66th minute this time by Mario Mata to put STU up 5-0. STU would be awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute; the shot went over the crossbar. STU would get a whopping 6th goal in the 84th minute this time by Edwin Meza. The match would come to a close with STU getting a nice conference win.
