MIAMI GARDENS.Fla- The STU men's soccer team was in action Sunday afternoon on Bobcat Field taking on Northwood University. Northwood came into the match with a 10-3-1 record and was 6-2-0 in the conference. STU came into the contest with a 7-9 record and was 6-2 in the conference and was looking to clinch the conference with a victory. STU won the match 2-0.
STU would be awarded a quick corner in the 5th minute that was deflected. STU's would give it a shot in the 15th minute with a shot Jhonothan Rico that was saved. Rico would give it another shot a minute later that was also saved. Rico played a big part in his teams win scoring two goals to seal the win.
Both sides would trade shots on goal in the first half to no avail. STU's Michelson Platon took a spectacular shot at goal with a header in the 44th minute that went wide. The first half would come to a close with the score level at 0-0.
In the 58th minute of the second half Jhonathan Rico would take advantage of Northwood goalkeeper Patrick O'neil's miss kick in the back and tucked the ball neatly inside the net for the match's first score. STU would go up 1-0.
In the 88th minute Rico would score again securing STU's insurance goal to seal the deal and assure STU of its second consecutive conference title.
"We played extremely well, I think the result is an indication of that, it's nice to have this on senior day”, STU head coach Felix Mats said. We have two more games, that is what we are going to focus on, but this is sweet. This is the second year in a row, it's great it's good for the program, for St. Thomas and the players”, Mats added.
Freshman STU goalkeeper Adam Green got a clean sheet to help STU secure its second consecutive conference title. Green was complementary of his back line. “They are very quick and make good decisions”, Green said. STU's defense was superb, not allowing a single goal. Green was rarely threatened and the entire defense looked calm, cool and collected the entire match.
STU is now the number one seed in the Sun Conference Tournament and is the regular season co-champion. They will host the tournament on November 11th and 12th on Bobcat Field.
