Miami Gardens. Fla- The STU women's volleyball team was in action Wednesday night taking on cross street rivals Florida Memorial University. STU would win the match in strait sets 3-0 and would improve to a 3-1 record. FMU came into the match with a 1-3 record. The match took place in the Fernandez Family Center.
The Bobcats were coming off a solid win against Kentucky state on Monday night and were looking to continue there solid play. The opening set of the match saw STU go up 4 to 3 and the Bobcats would not look back after that. They got a big game in the first set by number 10 Betina Schmidt who had a spectacular kill to put the her team up 11-6. This would start a huge run for STU and a barrage of kills from number 3, Brandi Arsenault who would finish the match tied with Nicole McInnis with 8 kills and a .467 attack percentage.
Long errors would be the story of the match for FMU. They had 15 team errors as opposed to STU's 7. STU would continue there dominant play and with the score at 24-16 Betina Schmidt would come up with a big block to secure the first set for the Bobcats.
In the second set STU got off to another quick start and would not look back. Big shots from STU's dynamic duo of McInnis and Arsenault would seal the deal in the second set for STU. FMU coach Gregory Stanback was not too happy with his team's performance after the game. “We didn't play with a lot of heart and emotion” Our young players need to learn how to win and how to compete.”
After taking a commanding 2-0 lead Nicole McInnis would go on the assault with a barrage of kills along with Arsenault. They would propel STU to an impressive run and win the set 25-12. “I think we tried really hard and tried to use this game to learn and get better” Brandi Arsenault said.
