STU KNOCKS OFF 23rd RANKED NORTHWOOD, BLANKS J&W

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The St. Thomas men's soccer team defeated 23rd ranked Northwood 3-1 in wet, humid conditions on Wednesday evening at Bobcat Field.  Three days later, the Bobcats blanked Johnson & Wales by the score of 4-0.  With the two wins, the Bobcats improved to 7-1 in the Sun Conference to move into sole possesion of first place in the conference, 1/2 game ahead of Thomas University (7-2). 

Jhonathan Rico scored two goals and Ignacio Mateos recorded two assists to lead the way for St. Thomas vs. Northwood.  Rico now has 12 goals on the year and 38 goals in his career at STU.  Rico opened the scoring in the 13th minute off an assist by Seba Lara.  The score remained tied heading into the half.  Three minutes into the second half, Mike Hinden socred on a header off an assist from Mateos to make the score 2-0.  Rico scored his second goal off another Mateos assist to make the score 3-0 with Northwood scoring their lone goal very late on a penalty kick in the waning minutes.

The Bobcats followed up their win vs. Northwood with a 4-0 shutout of Johnson & Wales on Saturday.  Rico scored two more goals to increase his goals total to 14 and his career goal total to 40. The senior forward scored one goal in the 39th minute followed by the game's final goal in the 63rd minute.  Mateos got the Bobcats on the board early with the game's first two goals, his first two goals of the season to go along with his team-best five assists.

Overall, the Bobcats are 9-3-1 with two regular season home games remaining: Wednesday vs. Florida Memorial and Saturday vs. Ave Maria. Thomas wraps up its season with a game vs. SCAD Savannah on Thursday.  STU needs two wins and a Thomas loss to clinch the Sun Conference regular season championship outright.
