Junior Dannisha Pierce leads STU in points and rebounds

WOMEN’S HOOPS PERFECT SO FAR WITH 7-0 START

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas women's basketball team returns home from the Thanksgiving break as one of the hottest teams in the nation.  With a perfect 7-0 mark, the Bobcats are coming off back-to-back wins in Denmark, S.C. over non-conference foes Morris (S.C.) and Voorhees (S.C.).
 
Through seven games, the Bobcats are led by junior forward Dannisha Pierce who is averaging 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.  Pierce has scored in double figures in six of the seven games this season and scored 20 points in back-to-back games vs. Brewton Parker and Loyola (La.).  In the second game of the year vs. Voorhees (S.C.), Pierce registered her 15th career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Senior forward Constina Cousins ranks second on the team in scoring and rebounding with averages of 12.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.   Cousins is shooting a team-best 57.8% from the field and leads the team with five blocked shots.
 
Junior guard Berna Miranda, leads the team in assists (3.29 per game) highlighted by her six-assist performance vs. Loyola (La.) at the Fernandez Family Center.  Miranda, who is averaging 10.9 points per game, has scored in double figures in four straight games. 
 
In the win vs. Loyola (La.), junior guard Antonella Marino scored her season-high with 16 points on 10-of-11 free throws. Marino leads the team in steals (5.0 per game) and ranks second on the team with 2.86 assists per game.
 
Junior forward Jasmin Sakers leads the squad in offensive rebounds (4.1 per game).  Sakers pulled down a season-high eight offensive boards and 11 total rebounds in the season opener vs. Johnson & Wales on Oct. 27 where she also scored 10 points for her second career double-double.
 
Next up for the Bobcats is a road game at Trinity Baptist in Jacksonville, Fla. at 6 p.m. on Friday.
 
On Saturday, Dec. 8, STU returns home for a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee vs. Trinity Baptist.  Dating back to last season, the Bobcats have won 12 consecutive home regular season games at the Fernandez Family Center.
