MEN'S SOCCER OPENS CONFERENCE PLAY WITH WIN

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas men's soccer team won its Sun Conference opener with a 3-1 victory over Warner on Wednesday evening at Bobcat Field.  Senior Jhonathan Rico, sophomore Andres Ruiz, and junior Philippe Silveira scored for the Bobcats (2-2-1).
 
After an evenly played first 15 minutes, Rico gave the Bobcats the early lead with a goal off an assist by Daniel Marulanda in the 18th minute of play.  St. Thomas controlled the game from that point on, highlighted by  a goal in the 35th minute by Ruiz on a Rico assist followed by Silveira's goal in the 54th minutes.  The Royals scored late in the game for the final score of 3-1, however were never a threat.
 
With the one goal and one assist, Rico now has five points this season to lead the Bobcats.  Junior Lyle Howe, last week's Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week, started his second consecutive game at goalkeeper.  Howe has recorded seven saves and has allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of play.
 
St. Thomas returns to action with a conference road game, 4 p.m. Saturday at Webber International  in Babson Park, Fla.
