Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The St. Thomas men's soccer team tied NCAA Division II Florida Southern, 1-1, in a game that reached overtime, but ultimately was called due to lightning in the area. With 2:27 left in the first overtime period and the score tied 1-1, the two teams agreed to call the game.
Senior forward
Jhonathan Rico scored the first goal of the season for the Bobcats in the 23rd minute on a beautiful assist from
Guillermo Huaman to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. St. Thomsa controlled play for most of the contest, but allowed a goal in the 66th minute on a penalty kick by Florida Southern's Ashley Holmes.
The Bobcats had an opportunity on a free kick from just outside the Florida Southern penalty box with time expiring in the second half, but were not able to capitlize sending the game into overtime. Neither team had any quality shots on goal in the seven-plus minutes of overtime before the game was called due to nearby lightning.
St. Thomas outshot Florida Southern 14-7 with six shots on goal compared to just two by FSC. Huaman took five shots (three on goal) and Rico took four shots with three on target, including his first period goal. The St. Thomas had four more corner kicks than Florida Southern.
