STU WOMEN'S HOOPS DROPS SEASON OPENER

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The 2013-14 St. Thomas University Women's Basketball team opened their season with a 75-70 loss to Reinhardt University Tuesday night in Waleska, Ga. The Bobcats fell to 0-1, while the Eagles improved to 1-1.

Senior Jasmin Sakers led all scorers with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. Sakers shot 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Sophomore Jessica Montalvo scored 18 points, while senior Berna Miranda scored 13 points off the bench.
The Bobcats fell behind in an ugly first half where they were outshot 55.2% to 25% by the Eagles. The two teams went into intermission with Reinhardt leading 36-20.

The Eagles stretched their lead to as many as 17 points with 1:48 into the second half. The Bobcats responded with a 17-6 run that included two three-pointers by Montalvo. A Miranda three-pointer cut the lead to five points with 11:30 to play. After the Eagles stretched their lead back to nine points, the Bobcats went on a 10-3 run capped off by a pair of free throws by Sakers with 7:55 to play.

STU would stay with a field goal of the lead, but could not break through down the stretch. Twice (67-66 and 69-68), the Bobcats got within one point, but Reinhardt scored six consecutive points in the final minute to seal the victory.

STU shot 55.2% and hit six three-pointers in the second half, but continued to have trouble slowing down a Reinhardt offense that shot even better at 57.7 for the half.

Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to Daytona Beach where they will take on NCAA DII opponent Bethune-Cookman on Thursday, Nov. 14.
