th ranked St. Thomas University women's basketball team defeated Florida Memorial, 64-43, Tuesday night in Miami Gardens and in the process set a school record for longest win streak (12) while matching the school record for most wins in a season (24). The Bobcats (24-2 overall, 12-0 conference) have won 12 straight games dating back to Jan. 4
th vs. Johnson & Wales. The previous record was 11 wins set at the start of the 2010-11 season. The 24 wins matched the school-best win total from last year when the Bobcats went 24-8.
In Tuesday's win at Florida Memorial, junior
Jasmin Sakers led STU with a career-high 23 points on nine-of-13 shooting from the field and a perfect five-of-five shooting from the free throw line. Sakers also pulled down nine rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds matching another career high.
Junior guard
Berna Miranda connected on three-of-four three-point attempts en route to 15 points. Senior
Dannisha Pierce chipped in with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds. Pierce, last year's Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year, came up with seven steals on the defensive end.
STU let the Lions hang around in the first half, taking just a three-point lead into intermission. After Florida Memorial scored the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to one point, the Bobcats went on a furious 13-0 run to take the lead 39-25 with 14 minutes to play. STU would lead by no fewer than 13 points the rest of the way, stretching the lead to as many as 28 points late in the game.
St. Thomas wraps up the regular season with home games at the Fernandez Family Center this Friday and Satuday. On Friday, STU hosts Southeastern (17-10, 5-7) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Bobcats will play Ave Maria (19-7, 11-1) with the Sun Conference championship likely on the line. Saturday will also mark Senior Day for three Bobcat seniors.
