Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (26-2, 14-0) won the regular-season Sun Conference championship with a 55-42 win over Ave Maria (20-8, 12-2) Saturday at the Fernandez Family Center.
Junior guard
Berna Miranda led all scorers with 19 points in 38 minutes played. Miranda also dished out a game-high six assists, pulled down four rebounds and recorded three steals. Junior forward
Jasmin Sakers scored 12 points and had six rebounds.
The Bobcats used defensive pressure to thwart the Gyrenes who shot just 23% from the field overall and were 3-of-21 from beyond the arc. STU shot 40% from the floor and were two-of-nine on three-pointers.
The win came on Senior Day as seniors
Shanika Brooks,
Constina Cousins and
Dannisha Pierce were all honored in pre-game ceremonies. Despite scoring in single-digits offensively, Cousins (9 pts) and Pierce (7 pts) responded on the glass with each player grabbing ten rebounds. Brooks came off the bench to make two three pointers for six points.
With the win, St. Thomas secured the top seed in the Sun Conference tournament. The tournament opens with a first round game vs. the tournament's eighth seed on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Fernandez Family Center. If STU wins the opening game, it will host the final four for the tournament to be played Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23.
