STU ADVANCES TO SEMIS OF SUN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
#1 St. Thomas 82, #8 Warner 58, Final
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Top seeded St. Thomas (27-2) advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Conference Championship with an 82-58 victory over eighth seeded Warner (7-21) Monday night at the Fernandez Family Center. St. Thomas, ranked 11th in the NAIA Division II Coaches Poll, will host the final four of the conference tournament and face fourth-seeded Webber International on Friday at 5 p.m.
The Bobcats were led by senior forward
Constina Cousins who scored 25 points on nine-of-14 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, two blocked shots, and two steals. Junior
Jasmin Sakers scored 22 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and dished out four assists. Senior
Dannisha Pierce recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
St. Thomas fell behind early 8-1 as Warner connected on a couple of early three-pointers. The Bobcats then tore off a 19-3 run to take the lead by ten points with 10:23 to go in the first half. STU took a 37-22 lead into halftime led by 13 points and nine rebounds by Sakers.
In the second half, the Bobcats connected on their first six field goal attempts to open up the lead to 20 points at the 16:47 mark. STU stretched its lead to as many as 32 points shooting 54% for the second half.
St. Thomas will host the Sun Conference Women's Basketball Championship semifinals and finals for the second consecutive year. Following the St. Thomas-Webber International game at 5 p.m. on Friday, the second semifinal will start at 7 p.m. The Sun Conference Championship game will be played on Saturday at the Fernandez Family Center.
