MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas opened up its 2014 regular season with a five set victory over Jamestown (N.D.) on Thursday night as part of the Ft. Lauderdale Sonesta Classic at the Fernandez Family Center. Freshmen
Whitney Battoe (17 kills, 11 digs) and
Carly Durr (12 kills) were impressive in their collegiate debuts, to go along with,contributions by veterans
Dana Nowaczyk (41 assists, six digs) and
Jordan Wiese (21 digs).
The Bobcats won the first set 25-20 before dropping the second set 25-17., In the third set, STU came from behind for a 23-25 before Jamestown won the fourth set 25-20 to set up the decisive fifth set., In the fifth set, the Bobcats recorded nine kills en route to the 15-10 win. In the decisive fifth set, the freshmen again led the way as Durr recorded three kills, Battoe had two kills, two digs and an ace. Fellow freshman
Caitlin McCluskey came up with three of her five digs in the fifth set in her collegiate debut as well.
St. Thomas returns to action at 2 p.m. vs. Missouri Baptist in the Sonesta Ft. Lauderdale Classic on Friday at the Fernandez Family Center.
