11TH RANKED BOBCATS OPEN 2014 WITH RESOUNDING WIN

Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (1-0), ranked no. 11 in the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches Poll, began its 2014 campaign with a resounding 5-0 win over Warner (0-1) at Royal Oaks Park in Miami Lakes, Fla.  The Bobcats scored four goals in the second half to put away the Royals.

Five different players scored for St. Thomas with career-first goals by Claudia Avila, Natalie Diaz, Delfina Lopez, Alexa Rivera to go along with a goal by Ana Parra, the second of her career.  Parra, Diaz, Lopez and Parra also notched assists giving them each three-point games.

Senior Ashley Taylor anchored the STU defense that shutout the Royals and allowed just four total shots and only one shot on goal.  Goalkeeper Cristina Garwacki recorded her first career shutout.

Parra opened the scoring with a goal in the 28th minute off a through ball by Lopez giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.  Midway through the second half, the Bobcats went on a goal-scoring flurry scoring with four goals in a 16-minute span.  Off a deflection by a Warner defender in the penalty box, Diaz scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.  Four minutes later, Rivera scored off a rebound off the crossbar.  Diaz set up Avila for a score off a corner kick in the 76th minute, before Lopez headed in a cross from Parra to finish off the scoring. 

The Bobcats return to action with a trip up to West Palm Beach for a neutral site contest vs. Davenport (Mich.) at 3 p.m. on Monday on the campus of Northwood University.
