SAVANNAH, Ga. - No. 3 seed St. Thomas (11-7) was elimated from The Sun Conference Tournament by the No. 2 seed Keiser (14-2-1). Â The Seahawks scored four first half goals to present an uphill climb, and then ensured victory with two second half goals. Â
Sarah Lyppert Thomsson was the lone goal scorer for the Bobcats.
Keiser drew first blood in the 15th minute when Sofia Kristensson found Amanda Blixt, who sent the ball forward and got behind the defense for the early score. Â Blixt showed her ability to distribute when she found Johanna Engberg in the 23rd minute for a 2-0 lead. Â
Things began to snowball for the Bobcats again just before the half. Â Off a corner kick in the 38th minute, Engberg gathered a loose ball off the scramble and scored her second goal of the afternoon. Â Louise Andersson added a goal in the 43rd minute to give the Seahawks a 4-0 lead heading into half.
Keiser's Renee Brown added another Seahawk goal in the 69th minute. Â Lyppert Thomsson finally got the Bobcats on the board in the 83rd minute, but that shot was countered by another Blixt goal in the 85th minute.
Today's results were certainly tough for a proud St. Thomas team. Â Even so, there are still many positives that they can hang their hats on. Â
Sarrah Granda was voted First-Team All-Conference. Â
Sharon Tejeda was recognized as Second-Team All-Conference and Lyppert Thomsson was an Honorable Mention. Â
Claudia Avila, Michelle Bailey, Zelda Jagryd, Lyppert Thomsson and Andreina Sifontes were all named to the conference's All-Academic Team.
This year's St. Thomas team has clearly grown. Â The previous year's team finished 7-8-1 and did not qualify for the conference tournament. Â This season, the Bobcats improved by four games in the wins column and lost one less game. Â Their play on the pitch earned them the No. 3 seed in this year's conference tournament.
What's more, the Bobcats only lose two players to graduation. Â Seniors Bailey and Granda were the Bobcats top offensive and defensive options. Â However, there is enough returning talent that now has the requisite postseason experience to continue the upward trajectory demonstrated under head coach Michelle Smith.
