DOWNS' GRAND SLAM POWERS VICTORY OVER DII OPPONENT LYNN

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (8-4) takes down Lynn (8-3) in prolific fashion at Paul Demie Mainieri Field, with a 17-3 Bobcat victory over the Fighting Knights. Jerry Downs (two-for-three with four RBI and a grand slam) and Eric Santamaria (three-for-six with three RBI and a two-run homerun) led the way for STU in the win, with Andres Hernandez picking up the victory for the Bobcats off of five innings pitched, giving up two runs (one earned) with four hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

The Bobcats continued their power inning fashion, as they made a statement in the first inning of their game against Division II opponent Lynn, as they scored a resounding 10 runs to start the game. A majority of the runs were either scored from either walks or errors, but the most powerful runs came from Downs bat, as he sent a opposite field homerun over the left field fence to post his first grand slam of the season. Lynn answered back with an unearned run off of Hernandez, but the Bobcats would quickly respond in the bottom half with a Michael Centeno grounder, scoring Oscar Rodriguez.

St. Thomas would continue their rally in the fourth and fifth innings as they added five more runs to their lead, with the most productive play coming from an Eric Santamaria no-doubt two-run homer in the fourth.  The Bobcats and Fighting Knights would trade runs in the eighth, but in the end the finals core would be 17-3 in STU's favor.

On the mound, besides Hernandez, Andres Denis, Alex Sarmiento, Devon Stubbing and Alex Vierra made appearances on the mound for the Bobcats in the night matchup, and a combined relief effort on had the pen surrender one run in their four innings of work.

At the plate, Bryan Bermudez, Cesar Ramirez, Steven Fischer, Paul Chacin and Oscar Rodriguez were all able to record hits on the day, with Bermudez, Fischer and Rodriguez also posting an RBI each.

The Bobcats head to Lake Wales this weekend to face off against Warner in a three-game conference series, starting this Friday at 2:30 p.m.
