MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The Bobcats (11-5) split their double-header against AIB College of Business (3-3)Â to open up a competition-filled spring break. Â In Game 1, the Bobcats erased a 6-1 deficit en-route to an 11-6 victory. Â In Game 2, however, the heroics would fall short as the Bobcats fell by the score of 9-7. Â
In Game 1,
Alex Sarmiento proved pivotal in the Bobcats comeback, surrendering no runs and only two hits in his two innings pitched. Â
Brandon Valentin performed solid work in the ninth, easing his way to three quick outs. Â At leadoff,
David Quintero performed his role marvelously to the tune of three hits in his four at-bats, two RBI, and one run. Â
Eric Santamaria was another standout, continuing his hot strectch of hitting. Â In his four at-bats, Sanatamaria earned three hits and three RBI.Â
In game one, AIB made themselves heard early, as they tacked on two runs in both the first and second innings, by posting two runs in each inning against STU starter
Jose Lazaro. The Bobcats were able to respond in the bottom of that second inning though as, Canizares' RBI single cut the AIB lead in half. AIB would continue to attack though as they scored another two runs off the Bobcats in the top of the fourth inning.
STU would respond though as the strong pitching from reliever
Alex Sarmiento helped spark the Bobcat morale. The Bobcats would put up put up five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put STU ahead in a major way. The largest hits from those two innings coming from a
Jerry Downs double scoring
Bryan Bermudez in the fifth and a
Eric Santamaria single scoring two in the sixth. Sarmiento would continue his strong performance and pick up the game one win, his first of the season, after going 2.1 innings and giving up no runs and posting a strikeout on the day.
In game two, AIB and STU would share a run each in the first inning, as AIB would continue their scoring in the third inning with four. But the Bobcats would be able to respond and keep the game close in the bottom part of the inning by scoring two. Later on though, errors would prove to be a major factor in the evening matchup, as STU totaled four errors, which would result in three unearned runs. The Bobcats made one last push in the final inning as a
Steven Fischer RBI double pulled the Bobcats within two, but it wasn't enough as AIB was able to secure the 9-7 victory to end the second game.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow to face Wilmington (Del.) at Paul Demie Mainieri Field. Â First pitch is scheduled for 6 P.M. Â For the Wildcats, this will mark the first game of their inaugural season.
