LAKE WALES, Fla. – St. Thomas (38-13, TSC 19-8) takes down Warner University (15-35-1, TSC 6-20) in a doubleheader makeup game from the February 27 weekend series at Royals Field. This win pushes the Bobcats into sole possession of second place in The Sun Conference standings.
Steven Fischer had the biggest output at the plate for STU, as he went two for four with an RBI and a double on the day.
Chris Rodriguez put his save total to double digits, as he closed out this game for his 10
th save of the season.
The makeup game started with the Royals scoring first in their first at-bats of the game of off Bobcat starter
Kharlin Sued. After their one run scored, the Bobcats would answer in the third, as a
David Quintero bunt scored one and a
Cesar Ramirez groundout scored another, to give the Bobcats their first lead of the dy. The Royals would answer back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, off of new pitcher for STU,
Marcos Barrios. Barrios would settle down after the inning and surrender no further runs in his outing. The Bobcats would regain their lead in the top of the fifth, scoring two from a
Paul Chacin RBI walk and a Fischer RBI groundout.
STU's 4-3 lead would hold, as a scoreless relief appearance from
Tyeler Checkley and close from
Chris Rodriguez secured the Bobcats conference win.
Overall, Fischer would be the only Bobcat to have a multi-hit day, with
Jerry Downs,
Oscar Rodriguez,
Brandon Canizares Douglas Rovello and Ramirez recording hits on the day.
The Bobcats will wait to see where they end up in conference standings, as a loss from Embry-Riddle against Ave Maria in their Sunday April 26 makeup game, would secure their second place spot, but a win would push them down to third in the standings.
The Sun Conference Tournament is scheduled to begin May 1, in Fort Myers at City of Palms Park.Â
