MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas improved to 4-0 on the regular season with two wins at The Athletes Meals Classic held Friday at the Fernandez Family Center. Â The Bobcats defeated Dakota State 3-1Â
(25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22), then dismantled Webber Intl. in straight sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-14).
In the first win, the Bobcats mounted a brilliant comeback trailing 21-14 in the fourth set before winning 11 of the match's final 12 points to defeat Dakota State. Â FIve Bobcats - Samantha Garza (13), Carly Durr (12), Whitney Battoe (12), Cheye-Anne Savage (11) and Marisa Markus (11) - recorded double-digit kills while setter Dana Nowaczyk recorded a game-hight 37 assists. Defensively, Sydney Maynard led all players with 35 digs, while Savage registered four blocks.STU dominated in all three sets in the straight-set victory over Webber International with a hitting percentage of .341. Â Garza (11) and Durr once again had double-digits kills, typically set up by Nowaczyk who notched 29 assists. Â Maynard recorded 15 digs over the three sets.
St. Thomas returns to action as The Athletes Meals Classic continues Saturday at 11:30 a.m. vs. Baker at the Fernandez Family Center.
