BABSON PARK, Fla. - No. 2 St. Thomas (9-9, 2-1 Sun Conference) split a doubleheader with host Webber International (8-7, 3-3 TSC) on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats won 10-8 in the first game, then fell 11-10 in game two.
In game one, a two-run home run by first baseman
Kendrick Gutierrez in the top of the fifth put St. Thomas ahead 4-1. Â Webber battled back to take a 6-4 lead after seven innings. Â In the top of the eighth, Third baseman
Cesar Ramirez hit a two-run double to left center to tie the game 6-6.
Ramirez would then score on a fielder's choice to give STU the lead before a RBI triple by
Adam Duarte down the right field line made the score 8-6. Â The Bobcats added two insurance runs in the ninth.
In the second game, St. Thomas jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Gutierrez followed by a RBI-double by
Steven Fischer. Â Webber cut the lead to 4-3, before a Ramirez RBI-double gave STU a two-run advantage. Â
The Warriors then scored five unanswered runs to storm into the lead. Â The Bobcats would come back behind
Oscar Aguirre who hit an RBI single in the seventh and then a two-RBI double in the ninth. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 11-11. Â In the bottom of the ninth, the Warriors scored the game-winning run to walk off with the win and avoid the series sweep.
STU returns to action on Monday with non-conference, neutral site games in Vero Beach, Fla.
