MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (28-15, 12-6 TSC) splits double header against Ave Maria (15-31, 3-16 TSC). After a halted game due to a lightning delay at the end of the second, the Bobcats go on to win game one 10-0 but fall in game two 9-6.Â
In game one
Jose Gomez (2-4, 3 R, 1 RBI),
Oscar Aguirre (3-5, 1 R, 3 RBI), and Â
Kendrick Gutierrez (1-3, 3 RBI) accumulated hits while totaling seven out of eight of the team's RBI's. Also, collective efforts from Bobcat pitcher's
Erne Valdes,
Alejandro Kan and
Ben Ancheff totaled (8 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) to hold the Gyrenes scoreless at the end of eight.
In the first inning, the Bobcats struck first when
Michael Centeno scored on an error by the first baseman. Guiterrez, punching in the next run, hit a sacrifice RBI to right field scoring Gomez. Now heading into the second, leading by two, St. Thomas reached the score board yet again.
German Morales hit an RBI double to score
Oscar Rodriguez followed by a fielder's choice to score Morales. Â St. Thomas continued its offensive roll in the bottom on the seventh as Aguirre RBI singled to center field scoring Mike Sanchez. A few bats later, Gutierrez made contact for an RBI double that set Aguirre and Gomez home. Leading by seven, the Bobcats pressed even further during the bottom of the eighth. Scoring an additional three runs, both Gomez and Aguirre drove in runs off of doubles to center field. The contest would end 10-0, resulting in a scoreless game for the Gyrenes.Â
In game two the tides turned as the Bobcats started off slowly. The Gyrenes scored five of their nine runs within the first five innings, while holding the Bobcats scoreless. Battling back, St. Thomas got the bats going in the bottom of the sixth when
Steven Fischer hit an RBI to score Mike Sanchez. Gomez, up next at bat, hit an RBI to center field that scored Bermudez and
Cesar Ramirez hit a sacrifice RBI which scored
Adam Duarte. In inning's seven and eight, Ave Maria scored four additional runs to the Bobcats one run. Giving best efforts in the bottom of the ninth, trailing five, St. Thomas generated an additional two runs off of singles but could not keep the momentum going. Ave Maria would best St. Thomas 9-6 in second game of the series.
The Bobcats head back to the diamond tomorrow afternoon and look to grab game three in the conference series against the Gyrenes. The game is set for 1 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
