BOBCATS SPLIT TSC MATCH-UP ON SENIOR DAY

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (14-16, 3-2 TSC) splits double header against Webber International (18-12, 3-3 TSC) on Sunday at Bobcat Field for Senior Night. The Bobcats won game one 2-0 and fell in game two 11-3. In game one, Jessica Castiglione was tremendous pitching seven innings allowing just one hit and walking none, while striking out three.

Castiglione pitched a one hitter in a complete-game shutout to earn the win over the Warriors. Against the Warriors, she did not walk a batter and the only hit she allowed came in the first at bat of the game. Castiglione went on to not allow a hit over the final 23 batters faced against WIU. In a tough-luck loss the day before vs. Ave Maria, she allowed just one run on six hits with the one run coming in the first inning. Between the two games and in a span of just over 24 hours, Castiglione pitched 13 straight scoreless innings.

The Bobcats would be the first to score in game one of the two game series.  In the bottom of the third inning, with two runners on base, Amanda Penton hit an RBI single advancing Jessica Matias to third scoring Amanda Furar.  St. Thomas held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when they addesd another run to the scoreboard. Matias would triple to right field putting herself in scoring position for pinch hitter Jamie Gonzalez. Laying down the RBI bunt, Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice scoring Matias from third. The rest of the game remained scoreless as the Bobcats walked away with the victory.

During game two, the roles quickly reversed, Webber International drew first blood and scored five of their 11 runs during the top of the first.  However, the Bobcats battled back in the bottom of the first when Melody Grafals hit an RBI double to score Meghan Riddle. The Warriors added another run in the top of the second to put the score 6-1 over St. Thomas.

In the bottom of the third, the Bobcats struck back with another RBI double hit by Grafals to score both Penton and Matias. Trailing Webber, the Bobcats three-run deficit would remain until the latter innings when Webber widened their marginal lead.  The Warriors added runs on the board in each of the final four innings to end the game with a final score of 11-3.

The Bobcats return back to the action Thursday, April 7th against Sun Conference opponent, Keiser University. The game was previously delayed due to rain earlier in the week but, the Bobcats look to sweep the two game series over the Seahawks. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
